SecondCrop has been designed to be simple so you can focus on the business of farming.

1. We collect some basic data about your operation and create a baseline for soil carbon at the property
2. You apply Loam’s microbial product CarbonBuilder at planting; you are not required to introduce any other new practice. 
3. CarbonBuilder microbial technology supercharges carbon capture into stable carbon pools in the soil (Visit our science page for details). 
4. After year two, Loam measures your impact through soil sampling and carbon modelling.
5. You earn carbon credits and can choose to bank them or ask Loam to facilitate a sale to a buyer.

Unlike current programs, Loam’s SecondCrop gives you an easy way to build soil carbon at scale and grow your bottom line, putting you on a fast track to soil health and improved profitability.

• • Achieve greater impact – Using Loam’s CarbonBuilder microbial product, farmers can significantly enhance soil health, build carbon stability and secure permanence which supports being awarded premium credits. 
  • Reduced barriers to entry – Farmers simply use CarbonBuilder on enrolled fields. You are not required to introduce any additional practices changes, but may choose to do so if you wish. CarbonBuilder integrates seamlessly with existing practices or can be your jumpstart in a transition to regenerative practices.
  • Own and control your carbon credits – You own and control the carbon credits generated on your farm. You can choose to bank them or sell them through Loam. The decision is entirely up to you.
  • Minimal program requirements – Farmers must use CarbonBuilder on enrolled fields. There are no upfront costs or long-term contracts (farmers can leave program any time in first two years, also at years six & ten). Loam Bio also only requires two years of historical data.

Loam’s SecondCrop program is available to row crop farmers using conventional practices and farmers who have introduced regenerative practices, regardless of when those practices were introduced. The only requirement is that farmers apply Loam’s CarbonBuilder microbial product on enrolled fields.

You are paid based on the amount of carbon captured in your soil (1 metric ton/CO2e sequestered = 1 carbon credit). You own your carbon credits and have the option to bank them or to work with Loam to sell your credit to buyers.

There are no program fees to participate outside the purchase of CarbonBuilder. Loam bears the program costs and they are covered by Loam’s portion of the carbon revenue that is generated. If no carbon is built, the liability for those costs remains with Loam.

Loam uses direct measurement (physical soil sampling) combined with laboratory analysis and stratification, as these are widely accepted as the most accurate measurement of changes in soil carbon.

You own and control your carbon credits. You can choose to bank them or sell them through Loam. The decision is entirely up to you and you should take into account your own circumstances. 

Loam will measure soil organic carbon through soil sampling and stratification. These measurements will be verified by BCarbon. BCarbon is a leading non-profit carbon registry and climate research centre affiliated with Rice University. The BCarbon Soil Carbon Protocol defines methods for quantifying the increase in soil organic carbon achieved over time on land, ensuring statistical reliability to support the issuance and sale of nature-based carbon credits.
